The Axe Handle Replies to the Trees

Given up to appease
the axe-eyed woodsman,
I have come with time

to love the sweet
arc of the swing,
the ineluctable chunk
as my head bites.

And yes, I admit,
I enjoy those first
creaking groans
as each tree begins

to see its fate.
