While Diana Sleeps

By Allison Ellis

Beneath illicit skies
She dreamt with the eyes of a devil.
And as if propelled by his very will
She rose
That dark smile gleaming across a face of pure radiance
And bathed in the light of his innocent kisses-
--Gifts he cannot hold back-
As he watches she who was born to shine beneath the lustful moon.

Full now
From drinking the heavens like ripened grapes
Each one bursting with her juices
And still his thirst is endless as she,
This golden creature,
Stirs atop the mountain
Beyond the horizon
And over empty fields
Waiting for that single moment
When the sun dips slowly down
Just barely out of reach.

But not quite yet
As she eyes the skies with the rapture of a thousand falling angels
And reaching out one perfect hand
Beckons to he whom she cannot
Should not have.

He who would deny the glance,
The eyes that pierce
That taunt and tempt
That melt the flesh of mortal men whispering her name in the darkening
fields.
The jade colored pools of eternity that now turn to him.
Having witnessed countless sunsets since the beginning of time.
Always wanton to his course
And watching him during his blessed sleep each night
As he is rocked on the shores of civilization.

But tonight he will slumber on her perfect breasts
As she pleads without words
Weaving enchantments like fishing nets
And they are the stars tumbling down into the blackened seas
And with them
The heavens rain a thousand sparks
And even the dark gods rejoice.

Marveled by the wisp of smile
He leaves his sleeping goddess beneath illicit skies
While she, in turn, basks in the brilliance of having flown too close to the
sun.
