The Price of Peace

By Stephen D. Rogers

Arthur was King of the Britons
And I of the dragons in flight
His arrows reined in the daytime
My fires struck terror at night

His men became weary from no sleep
My dragons from holes in their gut
We met under truce very secret
We wanted an end to this rut

Arthur suggested a stalemate
Dividing the world that we knew
He'd get the hills and the valleys
I'd get the oceans so blue

Snorting I begged his forgiveness
But dragons were partial to land
Perhaps if he breathed underwater
An agreement was surely at hand

Laughing at my witticism
Arthur had one other plan
To put an end to this killing
We would separate dragon and man

Meeting again in a clearing
Arthur flipped sword in the air
I called the side to see sunshine
No battle was ever so fair

He got the world of the living
I got the realm of the dead
The fires of Hell are the dragons
Wishing for clear skies instead
