The Golden Goose

By Stephen Paling

Why wait for gold
dropping slow
like bright honey
when surely inside
the goose must lay
a gooseweight fortune--

ours for the having.
And if not that,
at least our daily
ritual of waiting
will end, and we

can sit back sated
with good luck and good goose
to marvel at our fortune
and all that it brought.
