Needlework Dragon

By Rochelle Mitchell

I sit inside
The castle walls
Embroidering my tapestry
Where knights
With silver swords
Battle dragons
With flames bright

Each loving stitch
Brings to life
My needlework dragon
His scales
Form like pearls
That shine
With golden thread
Brighter than the sun

My dragon done
I touch my handiwork
As a single tear falls
The fabric grows taut
And fiery warm
I leap from
The tapestry
Frightened and amazed
To witness
My once flat dragon round
Until he fills
My stone chamber

Why did you send knights
To battle me
Asks my dragon

I give no answer
He places me
Upon a blue quilt
Where geese and herons
Fly among the clouds

I awake
To my dragon lover's
Warm embrace
Adieu fair dragon
Fly with the birds
Go be free

I wrap the dragon
In the quilt
He vanishes
To join the geese
And herons
