The Well

By Paul G. Tremblay

The well was empty

not of water
overgrown path forgotten
a secret kept
too well

The well was empty

not of wishes
fancy or whim
not of tales
of love and loss
all known
too well

The well was empty

of wishers
visionaries of the prosaic and sublime
of the token
shiny or tarnished
each accessory
to a lost dream
a lost time
imagined
too well
