Beauty's Truth

By Erin Donahoe

The bedtime story amuses me
As I lie here in the trembling dark.
To think it's all my fault
and all my glory.
In some way, that I caused the theft
of the precious scarlet rose,
Yet it was my love that, holy,
Like cleansing waters,
Purged him of the monster within.
While in reality, it is not he
who has been deflowered...
And for all the care
and love
I try to give,
the only thing I see
is a Beast.
